GREAT WHITE Concert Death Toll Rises To 99
March 7, 2003The death toll from the GREAT WHITE nightclub fire reached 99 yesterday (March 6),after a severely burned Florida man died of his injuries at Massachusetts General Hospital, according to the Providence Journal.
Mitchell C. Shubert, 39, of Newberry, Fla., died at 1:10 p.m., a hospital spokesperson said. He had been burned over nearly 30 percent of his body and suffered lung damage from smoke inhalation.
Shubert was a construction worker who had been in Rhode Island to visit family and a friend, Kevin Blom, and work on a construction project.
"He was an outdoorsman and a fighter. Tough guy," said Shubert's father, Walter Shubert, from his home in Gainesville, Fla., last night.
"We thought he was going to survive this thing because he was so tough," Walter Shubert said, "but there was so much damage, I guess, to his lungs and his heart and his kidneys he just couldn't fight this off."
Walter Shubert said his son had traveled to Rhode Island to visit Blom and do some work. "Kevin had a construction project up there and my son went up there with him to finish it."
Kevin Blom suffered minor injuries in the fire, but his brother, Steven Blom, 40, of Cranston, died in the fire.
According to reports from the Gainesville Sun, Shubert had been unemployed and had no insurance. Members of his church, The Rock Church in Gainesville, started a collection.
He leaves a daughter, Maryanne Shubert, 17, of Newberry, Fla.
